How To Prep Your Specimen For Taxidermy

To properly prepare a fish for taxidermy, photograph it immediately to record its colors, keep it wet, and freeze it wrapped in a damp cloth inside a plastic bag. Place carefully and flat in the freezer making sure to not crease the fins or break the fins. Keep frozen until ready to take in to taxidermist

1. Field Dress ASAP. It's important to field dress your trophy as soon as it's down. 
2. Carefully Pack Out Your Animal. Make sure to pack out your trophy carefully.
3. Quickly Cool Your Harvest. The sooner you can cool your deer, the better.

Immediately cool it, clean off blood and mud, then wrap the head and feet in wet paper towels to prevent freezer burn and skin damage. Tuck the head gently against the back, ensuring the wings are smoothed against the body. Place the bird in a sealed freezer bag, removing as much air as possible, and double-bag it for extra protection. Finally, label the bag with your name, contact info, species, date, and location of the harvest and get it to the taxidermist as soon as possible.
